A 50-year-old woman appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for possessing two elephant tusks. Karina Cloete was arrested at the harbour town on Monday after police got a tip that she had the tusks. She was charged under the provisions of the Controlled Wildlife Products and Trade Act. She was granted bail of N$10,000 and her case was postponed to 10 February this year to allow for further police investigations. The arrest comes less than a month after the arrest of 69-year-old Albertus le Roux at Swakopmund on 28 December. He was charged with being found in possession of controlled wildlife products, which included five pieces of elephant tusks and suspected rhino horn, as well as live ammunition. The value of the items was estimated at about N$32,000. Le Roux was released on a warning and his case was postponed to 25 February. There is another ongoing case where three men from Walvis Bay are facing charges of illegal possession and dealing in two elephant tusks.
