A motorist is nursing injuries in hospital after he was attacked by stray
elephants along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway.
In the incident that happened on Wednesday, December 29, the motorist was
attacked by a heard of elephants along the road.
The gigantic beasts went on rampage and trampled on his vehicle while
helpless motorist remained trapped inside.
Luckily the man survived the attack, although he sustained injuries. He was
rushed by well-wishers to the Naivasha sub-County hospital.
Witnesses claimed that the elephants went on to destroy property of unknown
value in Lakeview and Hellsgate wards. Area residents raised alarm with the
Kenya Wildlife Services Institute in Lakeview ward.
KWS wardens were dispatched to trail the elephants in a bid to tame the
animals which posed threat to human life and property.
The operation spilt over to Thursday, December 30, when the wardens tracked
down the elephants to a tract of land on the highway. A roadblock was
erected along the highway, to allow the rangers to chase away the elephants.
While rangers directed the elephants on the ground, a helicopter monitored
movement from above.
KWS established that the elephants had migrated from Narok and were en
route to the Aberdares. The wardens noted that the attack by the towering
animals was unusual.
In September 2021, a herd of stray elephants caused a scare along the
Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Mariakani.
The incident fell barely a month after KWS officers were forced to use
shoot an elephant in Voi on August 31 to rescue passengers trapped in a
private vehicle.
The passengers were stuck after hitting the elephant, causing it to land on
the car.
