A suspect wanted for wildlife and drug trafficking was on Saturday night extradited to the US to answer to his crimes. Abdi Hussein Ahmed alias Abu Khadi was extradited following orders issued by Milimani Chief Magistrate Roseline Aganyo on August 31, 2022. Ahmed is wanted in the US after he was charged in an indictment alongside Moazu Kromah, Amara Cherif and Mansur Surur. "All are wanted for participating in a conspiracy to traffic in Rhinoceros horns and Elephant ivory, both protected wildlife species, valued at more than $7 million USD," DCI director George Kinoti said . Kinoti said they illegally poached more than 35 rhinoceros and more than 100 elephants. Their indictment followed a joint investigation of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. They were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment. Ahmed was arrested by sleuths from the serious crimes unit on August 3, 2022, in an early morning raid in Maua, Meru County, where he was staying in a rented room. Detectives had received information regarding his location and moved with speed to arrest the suspect. The prosecution of this case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit. Assistant United States Attorneys Sagar K. Ravi and Jarrod L. Schaeffer are in charge of the prosecution.
