In a bid to combat the ongoing menace of marauding elephants devastating
farmlands in Borno State, the House of Representatives has taken decisive
action.

Hon. Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) brought a motion of urgent national
importance to address this issue during a recent plenary session.

These elephants, believed to be from Waza National Park in neighboring
Cameroon, annually traverse Ngala and Kala-Balge local government areas of
Borno State, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake as they trample
crops and other agricultural produce.

Hon. Zainab Gimba expressed grave concern that the continuous destruction
of farmlands by these elephants could exacerbate the already dire situation
for the residents of these areas, particularly since they are under
military control.

The legislator pointed out that attempts had been made by the
Conservator-General to acquire equipment aimed at deterring the elephants
and preventing further damage to crops. However, the effort was
insufficient to combat the ongoing crisis effectively.

Hon. Zainab Gimba praised the swift response of the Borno State Government
but noted that their resources were stretched thin.

As a result, she called on the Federal Government, specifically the
Ministry of Environment and the National Park, to collaborate with Borno
State in addressing this menace.

This joint effort is expected to provide essential logistical support to
effectively combat the marauding elephants and protect the livelihoods of
the affected communities.

The collaboration between the Federal Government and Borno State is seen as
a crucial step towards resolving this pressing issue and mitigating the
suffering of the local population.
