PMK leader and former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said that at least 5
people including 3 women and 2 men have been killed by wild elephants in
Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district in just 32 days. He also said according
to central government’s data at least 152 people have been attacked and
killed by wild elephants in Tamil Nadu in 3 years between 2019 and 2022.

In a statement, the former MP from Dharmapuri has raised  concerns that
human and animal conflicts are increasing day by day in Tamil Nadu,
especially in the districts located along the Western Ghats.

“There are many reasons for human-animal conflict, such as water scarcity
in the forest areas, encroachment of forest areas by humans for
agriculture, and destruction of elephant habitats by humans. In just 32
days from January 17 to February 19, 5 people including three women and two
men were killed by wild elephants in Krishnagiri district. In the last 3
years from 2019 to 2022, 1700 people have been killed by tigers and
elephants across India, out of which 152 people have been killed by
elephant attacks in Tamil Nadu alone,” Anbumani said.

The PMK leader urged the Tamil Nadu government to take action to prevent
human-animal conflicts.

While people dying in the elephant attacks, on the other hand, agricultural
produce has been damaged in tens of thousands of acres due to wild animal’s
raid in the farm lands. The Tamil Nadu government recently announced Rs 10
lakh compensation to the families of those killed in elephant attacks.
However, adequate compensation is not provided for the lives killed by
animals and the crops damaged. In some areas, the Tamil Nadu government is
providing only the first phase of compensation, but not the remaining
amount, he alleged.

Anbumani Ramadoss also suggested the state forest department to set up
special forces to monitor the entry of wild animals into the villages and
send them back to the forest.

“As animals come into human habitations due to water scarcity in the forest
during summer, temporary water tanks should be opened for animals by
obesrving the forest areas that experience water shortage,” he suggested.
