A 60-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild tusker in the presence
of her son near NH-55 at Haladiabahal village under Sadar forest range in
Dhenkanal district on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sankhali Behera of Haladiabahal. The
tusker, which had separated from its herd and had been wandering, came
close to the village on Tuesday night. Despite objections from her family
members, the woman went to the nearby forest to answer nature’s call. While
returning, she encountered the lone tusker, which crushed her to death .The
body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem.

Tensions flared among villagers after the incident, and forest officials
rushed to the area to pacify them. They also provided an initial ex-gratia
payment of Rs 60,000 to the victim’s family. The remaining amount will be
paid after the submission of the required documents.

Dhenkanal DFO Sumit Kar warned villagers not to venture into the forest
during the morning and evening hours due to the movement of elephants.
