A wild elephant died on the spot after it was hit by a goods train when it was crossing the tracks in an area between Chichaki and Garia-Vihar stations near pole number 338/06 on the Dhanbad–Gaya route under Dhanbad railway division of East Central Railway around 11:40pm on Friday. As a result of the collision, the engine of the goods train jumped off the tracks and two wagons got derailed due to the impact. The accident left rail traffic on the Grand Chord section of the DelhiHowrah route disrupted for hours. “Traffic on both the up and down lines of the section was disrupted for more than four hours,” Dhanbad railway division’s public relations officer P K Mishra said, adding, “While traffic on the up line was restored by 2:40am, the down line could only be cleared by 6:10am.” Dhanbad divisional railway manager Ashish Bansal, along with his senior officials, rushed to the spot and supervised the restoration work carried out by a rescue team from Gomoh.
