An elderly couple was trampled to death by two elephants in wee hours of
Monday in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh.

The incident occurred in Gram Panchayat Darhora of Pratappur forest range
where Haridhan, 79, and his wife Nanhi, 65, were asleep in their kutcha
house located in the periphery of the forest.

The tuskers, in search of grains stored in the house, ransacked the elderly
couple’s home and attacked the duo. The elephants trampled the couple and
consumed the grains stored inside their home.

Upon hearing the chaos, the villagers raised an alarm, prompting the
elephants to retreat into the forest. The forest department officials were
informed and a team reached the spot in the morning.

The villagers alleged that there were no forest rangers or officers
residing in the Pratappur area, that made them more vulnerable to tusker
attacks.

Officials said that the elephants had migrated from Sitapur Lundra via
Ambikapur to Pratappur and Wadrafnagar area. These elephants have been
roaming in the forests of Ganeshpur, Singhara, and Sarhari for nearly 15
days. One tusker of the herd had earlier killed a man in Lundra region
about ten days back, said officials.

Following the incident, forest officials have issued a warning to the
villagers, urging them not to roam in forest and maintain safe distance
from elephants.
