Two elephants strayed into Durgapur from Dalma forest and went on a rampage
at the Coke Oven police station area on Wednesday morning. This had
triggered tension among the locals. The two wild tuskers entered the
Karongopara area. They also entered the New Town ship area after passing
through Liluahbadh Bustee area. After being chased by the forest personnel,
the two tuskers took refuge in the Bidhannagar area.

There was, however, no report of any injury in the incident. People went
berserk after they spotted the wild animal gazing on the road. Some took
out their mobile phones and captured photographs of the two.

According to a forest department official, one tusker went towards the
Shibpur forest in Kanksa while the other was roaming freely inside the
township giving hard time to forest department. The other one entered the
FCI colony and carried out some damages. The tusker was finally
tranquilised by the Forest Department officials. It took around nearly
eight hours for the forest department to tranquilise the animal and later
it was lifted on a truck with the help of two cranes.

Mamata Forest official had to administer three tranquilisers. It was a
difficult time for the police to manage a large number of people gathered
there to have glimpses of the wild tuskers. It would be set free at
Jhilmili jingle. A senior forest department official in the district said
the two elephants entered Durgapur from Bankura by crossing Damodar River.
The two elephants were separated from the herd. The forest department had
restricted the movement of the elephants further into the city. In a
separate incident, fresh pugmarks were found at Rangamati area of Lalgarh
on Wednesday morning triggering panic among the villagers.
