Raipur: An elderly man was trampled to death by an elephant in the Chaitma
forest range of Katghora forest division in Korba district on Wednesday
night. Katghora Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kumar Nishant said that it
was the same elephant that had killed three women in August.
The DFO said the incident occurred around 10 pm on Wednesday at Thadpakhana
village (Hathibadi) under the Chaitma forest range, when 60-year-old
Mewaram was at his house and moved out of it sensing the presence of the
tusker.
The elderly man went to his vegetable garden behind the house but came face
to face with the elephant. The elephant caught hold of Mewaram with its
trunk and trampled him to death, the DFO said.
Earlier on Wednesday, the same tusker had attacked and killed a bull in
nearby Mudabhata village, according to forest officials.
Meanwhile, the kin of the deceased were provided an immediate relief amount
of Rs 25,000, and as per provisions, the remaining compensation of Rs 5.75
lakh will be given after completing formalities, the DFO said.
One month ago, the Katghora Forest Division in Korba district, witnessed a
tragic human-elephant conflict that resulted in the deaths of three
individuals. A lone elephant, which had strayed from its herd, roamed near
human settlements, leading to a series of fatal encounters. The victims,
three women, were killed in two places in Korba district by the elephant.
In response to the incidents, forest department officials and wildlife
experts launched efforts to track and monitor the movements of the
elephant. Their aim was to guide the elephant back into deeper forests,
away from populated areas, to prevent further fatalities.
