The Riau Center for Conservation and Natural Resources (BBKSDA) conducted a
rescue of a Sumatran elephant calf that got lost in a resident's oil palm
plantation in Gunung Sari Village, Gunung Sahalan District, Kampar Regency.

The head of the Riau BBKSDA, Genman Hasibuan, said that his party received
information that the Sumatran elephant calf was abandoned by its mother who
continued to move away along with other elephant groups on Sunday, March 9.
His party found an elephant calf and evacuated it on Monday (10/3).

"The abandoned Sumatran elephant calf is estimated to be about two months
old and male," he said in Pekanbaru, Antara, Tuesday, March 11.

Then, the results of the physical examination of the animals showed healthy
conditions, but they still could not eat food except milk. The Sumatran
elephant child was immediately evacuated by a team from the Riau BBKSDA
wildlife rescue unit to the Minas Elephant Training Center (PLG), Siak
Regency.

The team decided this so that the health of animals can be observed every
day intensively. This is considering the age of a baby so that it is very
risky to catch a disease.

"The presence of Sumatran elephant animals separated from the mother and
her group also has the potential to create negative interactions with
humans and other wildlife," he said.

The animal will then be temporarily treated at PLG Minas waiting for a team
from the wildlife rescue unit to seek its mother and group. This is so that
the animal can be immediately released back into the wild and join groups
in its natural habitat.

"The Riau KSDA Center expresses its appreciation to the community and all
parties who have supported the success of the Sumatran elephant child
evacuation process so that it can be saved and temporarily treated at the
Minas PLG," he said.
