Bengaluru: A wild elephant, aged around eight years, has died due to severe
heat and non-availability of water in Sangama Wildlife area in Kanakapura
taluk of Ramanagar district.

According to information available, the jumbo had become weak in the last
one week following the heat wave, and developed health complications. On
receipt of information, local forest staff started treating the pachyderm
but the jumbo died on Wednesday.

Assistant Conservator of Forests K.D. Srinivasaiah said the heat wave was
more this year when compared to previous years because of which wild
animals were suffering a lot. The heat took a toll of elephant may due to
drying up of all natural waterholes in the forest.

The forest department had created artificial ponds at many places inside
the forests and filling it up manually to quench the thirst of wild animals
but even this has not helped in preventing animal deaths due to the heat
wave.
