Even as the threat from the wild tusker Kabali was slowly waning, a makhna
(tuskless male elephant) created a sscare, though briefly, by positioning
in the middle of the Athirappilli-Malakkappara road at Mayiladumpara near
Aanakkayam on Tuesday. KSEB driver Babu Mohanan said the tempo traveller in
which the KSEB staff at Sholayar
were travelling to attend a medical camp at Chalakkudy, had remained
stranded on the road for some time.

Another driver, Saji, who was driving the traveller then, had to reverse
the vehicle for some distance as the elephant walked towards the vehicle.
However, it did not attack the vehicle, and went back into the forest after
some time, through the elephant corridor in that area. Babu said the makhna
was being seen in the area for some time and the people of the area fondly
call it Kattappa. This elephant walks slanting to side, he said.

The forest officials said several wild animals are seen on the road in that
area, and there was no need for panic, as most of them do not attack human
beings unless provoked. They said they are thoroughly monitoring Kabali,
and it had not created any major problem on the main Chalakkudy-Valpara
road, in the last couple of days. The ban on the tourist movements on that
route, imposed against the backdrop of the threats from Kabali is likely to
be lifted from December 1, the forest officials said.

In another development, wild elephants strayed into human habitations, and
destroyed crops at Varantharapilli Kallichithra tribal colony area. Tribal
leader N N Pushpan demanded urgent action to check the attack by wild
elephants.

Meanwhile, Malayora Samrakshana Samithi leader E A Omana said the forest
authorities have informed the samithi that solar fencing work would begin
at the Kavarampilli-Nadampadam stretch on Tuesday.
