A 50-year-old woman was trampled to death by a tusker in Lalanakere in
Mandya taluk on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Sakamma.
Police said that a wild elephant attacked Sakamma while she was working in
a sugarcane field. Labourers at the field said they were not aware of the
presence of elephants in the vicinity.
Sakamma was spraying fertilizer in the sugarcane field when the elephant
appeared out of nowhere, and attacked and trampled her. She died on the
spot. Immediately, the fellow workers fled to safety and escaped from the
tusker unharmed.
On learning about the incident, hundreds of villagers assembled at the spot
and tried to scare away the elephant by pelting stones at it. The villagers
expressed anguish against the forest officials who asked them not to pelt
stones at the elephant and accused them of not initiating measures to
prevent human-animal conflicts in the area.
‘Be vigilant’
Srirangapatna MLA Ramesh Babu Bandisiddegowda, who visited the spot,
requested the villagers to be vigilant while working in the agricultural
fields.
Mandya deputy commissioner Kumara, superintendent of police N Yatish, and
other officials visited the spot.
