Thiruvananthapuram: The govt is not indifferent to the problems faced by
communities in forest areas and is working to implement sustainable
preventive measures, stated forest and wildlife minister A K Saseendran. He
was speaking after inaugurating the elephant deterrent trenches in the
Pottomavu tribal settlement as part of efforts to reduce human-wildlife
conflicts in the Thiruvananthapuram division.
He said that the govt is adopting defence measures suitable for each region
to prevent wildlife attacks. Solutions can only be achieved gradually, and
to prevent wild animals from wandering into human habitats, small ponds
will be constructed, and fruit trees will be planted to ensure availability
of water and food within the forest. The project is being implemented with
financial assistance from Nabard, the minister said.
In nine areas under the Thiruvananthapuram division, elephant deterrent
trenches are being constructed over a distance of 15.5km at a cost of Rs
2.77 crore with financial aid from Nabard. The trenches are being built at
places that share borders with like Kulathupuzha, Palode, and Paruthipally,
and in tribal settlements.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Arippa state forest training
centre and was attended by MLA D K Murali among others.
