RUDRAPUR: A 20-year-old male elephant suffering from a prolonged illness
died in Jaspur region of Udham Singh Nagar district, said forest
authorities on Wednesday.

According to villagers, the elephant crossed Fika river early on Tuesday
morning before collapsing in farmer Darshan Singh's field in Kripacharya
Pur village. They quickly alerted the authorities.
Jaspur MLA Aadesh Chauhan arrived at the scene and called divisional forest
officer (DFO) Prakash Chandra Arya to the spot. By 10:30 am, ranger
Dharmanand Sunal, SDO Sandeep Giri, and veterinarians Dr Sudhanshu Mishra
and Dr Yogesh Sharma arrived. To ease the elephant's distress, officials
provided shade and attempted to offer water, but the animal refused to
drink.

Considering the severity of the situation, forest authorities called Dr
Himanshu Pangti from Nainital Zoo, who arrived at 1:15 pm to begin
treatment. Despite a four-hour-long effort, the animal succumbed at 5 pm.
"The elephant was severely ill for a long time and had stopped eating and
drinking. We tried our best, but its condition was critical," he said.

Sunal said that a postmortem report would determine the exact cause of
death. The report will be prepared in another two to three days.

Meanwhile, a baby elephant strayed into Banna Khera Sani Santoshpur village
in Bazpur, causing panic among residents. As curious villagers gathered,
the frightened calf became agitated. The forest department was alerted, and
forest officer Gopal Krishna Kapil led a rescue operation. The baby
elephant was safely relocated to the forest near Ranpuri, ensuring its
well-being.
