A four-month old elephant calf fell into a unfenced well near Pennagaram in
Dharmapuri district, early on Saturday morning. Forest officials rescued it
following a six hour ordeal.

The 30-feet deep well belonged to V Selvam, 38, of Podur village near
Pennagaram. The village is located close to the forest.

“The elephant calf which came out of the forest, fell into the well due to
lack of visibility,” said P Ayyanar, president of the Hogenakkal Forest
Group.

A team of forest officials rushed to the spot to rescue the calf. They uses
an earthmoving machine to rescue the calf from the well.

“Forest personnel also tied the calf up with ropes to help pull it up,”
Ayyanar added.

The calf was found to be healthy and didn’t sustain any injuries in the
fall. Forest officials later released it into the Chinnar forest area.
