Two Arrested with Weapons and Smoked Elephant Meat in Meghalaya Village

Two persons were arrested with weapons and elephant meat from a village in
Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Tuesday night.

Qurenius Muktieh (27) and Jethril Umbah (32) were first apprehended by
villagers of Mawpdeng located near the Assam-Meghalaya border under Umsiang
OP of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Tuesday night along with two
country-made weapons and smoked elephant meat, police said.

Both persons were nabbed and sent for medical examination. The weapons and
the elephant meat have been seized for FSL examination, the police also
said.

Forest officials under Sonapur Range under Kamrup East division, Basistha,
Guwahati have informed that two elephant deaths have been reported since
November 2024 with the first death of an elephant recorded on November 16,
2024, and the second elephant carcass recovered on March 18, 2025, and
these persons are suspected to be involved in poaching.

In this regard, a case has been registered with the Khanapara police
station and an investigation is on, the police added.
