Coimbatore Forest Division paid ₹8.44 crore in compensation over three years

Compensation to the tune of ₹8.44 crore was disbursed for human deaths and
for crop and property damages in the Coimbatore Forest Division between
April 2021 and October 2024, according to the Forest Department.
As per statistics provided by the Asian Elephant Conservation Research and
Conflict Management Centre, Coimbatore, 68 persons died of attacks from
wild animals, particularly elephants, during the period, for which the
State government disbursed solatium to the tune of ₹3.09 crores.
A total of 3,275 incidents of damage made by wild animals to crops raised
by farmers living in villages bordering forests were reported during the
period. Wild elephants, wild boars, peafowls and deer were among the wild
animals that caused damages to different varieties of crops, for which the
government paid ₹4.68 crores.
As many as 166 persons suffered minor to severe injuries in negative
interactions with wild animals, and they were paid a total compensation of
₹43.21 lakh.
The government disbursed compensation to the tune of ₹9.19 lakh for loss of
40 heads of livestock, especially due to attacks by leopards.
A total of 177 incidents of property damage were reported to the Forest
Department during the period, for which the State handed over ₹14.41 lakh
to the affected people. Forest Department officials said that incidents of
damage to properties included damages made by wild elephants to houses,
compound walls, fences and agricultural pump systems.
According to the Department, the frontline staff came across 14,962
incidents of wild elephants entering human habitations during the period.
Officials said that habitat degradation, human disturbances and land use
changes in areas abutting forest boundary, and changes in cropping patterns
were among the reasons that escalated the human - elephant conflict
situation in the division.
