An elephant calf fell into a well at Sureidihi village under the
Rasgobindpur forest range in Odisha's Baripada district. It was later
pulled out by a team of fire department and forest officials.
In the wee hours of Sunday, a herd of elephants entered Sureidihi village
and started damaging the houses.
Amid the chaos, villagers found that a calf had fallen into a 14-foot deep
borewell. They immediately informed forest officials about the incident.
Sukumari Patra, a villager, said, "We were asleep after having dinner...we
heard the trumpeting noise of elephants, [and saw that] they had completely
damaged our house."
"As the elephant herd was returning, one of the calves fell into the well.
We informed the forest officials immediately," said Sukumari Patra.
Soon after, fire teams and forest officials reached the spot and started
rescue operations.
They first put a pipe to suck out the water inside the well even as the
calf was facing problems in staying afloat.
A rope contraption tied to a machine was used to pull the calf out of the
well.
