GUWAHATI: In a chilling turn of event, a substantial quantity of elephant
meat was seized by the Meghalaya police from two individuals near the
Assam-Meghalaya border.
The suspects were nabbed in Topatoli, Sonapur in Assam's Kamrup
(Metropolitan) district, along with two country-made rifles.
This comes amidst an investigation by the Assam Forest Department to look
into the death of an elephant at Dikchak under the Sonapur forest division.
It has been suspected by the authorities that the apprehended persons may
be linked to the tusker's death. In this regard, the Assam Forest
department has sought their custody for further interrogation.
However, the probe appears to have been hindered as the Meghalaya police
has not yet handed over the accused to the custody of their counterparts in
Assam.
The delay in the transfer process has raised concerns over jurisdictional
coordination between the two states.
Conservationists have called for punitive measures against elephant
poaching, highlighting the need for stronger enforcement of wildlife
protection laws.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, a highly decomposed carcass of a wild
elephant was discovered in the remote Deopahar area of Rani Reserve Forest.
The elephant is suspected to have been poached about a month ago. Several
parts of the elephant’s body were missing, raising suspicions of illegal
hunting. According to sources, poachers may have slaughtered the elephant
on-site and dried the meat before transporting it.
