Assam: 70-year-old man trampled to death by wild elephant in Digboi

A 70-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Durgabari in
the Tinsukia district of upper Assam in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The person has been identified as Chitranjan Chakraborty.

“The person went out from his home for a morning walk, suddenly a wild
elephant attacked him. He was rushed to hospital where doctor declared him
brought dead,” said a local resident.

On getting the information, forest personnel rushed to the site of the
incident and conducted necessary formalities.

A detailed report on the incident will be submitted soon, said a forest
official.

The Range Officer has given small assistance to the kin of the deceased for
carrying out the last rites.

Forest official said compensation of Rs.4 lakh will be given to the next of
kin of the victim by the environment and forest department after receipt of
post-mortem report and other documents.

“Due to movements of vehicles in the oil field area the elephant facing the
problem and comes out and strays in residential areas. The elephants’
corridors are encroached by humans by making house which gives rises to
human-elephant conflict,” said Devojit Moran, an environmentalist.

“Human-elephant conflict has been rising due to shrinking of forest cover.
The elephants in search of food come out from the forest and strayed into
human habitation. Till now many people were trampled to death by elephant
in Digboi,” said Moran.
