Madikeri: A herd of elephants entered coffee plantations of Hosakote
village under Bilugunda gram panchayat and damaged the crops, causing huge
losses to the growers of Hosakote village.

The elephants, which are roaming outside their habitat and camping in
coffee plantations on the outskirts of the village, damaged the crops in
this area. Local growers alleged that although they appealed to the forest
department for help, there is no response.

The biggest challenge for the farmers is to maintain the yield of various
crops that they worked to grow throughout the year, said DH Sufi Haji, a
plantation owner in Hoskote.

The threat of wild elephants has been excessive in many areas in Hoskote
and Bilugunda for the past several months. A herd of 8 to 12 elephants
camped in the surrounding areas and raided the crops during the night.
Although the number of elephants outside the forest area increased,
foresters have not taken it seriously, the villagers alleged.

This comes amidst humblebees attacking a man in the field at Bellur village
under Hudikeri gram panchayat of Ponnampet taluk. Ramesh, a resident of
Bellur village, was working in his field when he was attacked by
humblebees. Though Ramesh ran towards his house, he tripped and lost
consciousness. His wife, Tashma, called Ramesh's mobile as he was late.
However, when he did not respond, she went to the farm looking for him and
found Ramesh lying on the road. She called villagers, who rushed him to Sri
Ramakrishna Sevashrama Hospital in Ponnampet. He is out of danger.
