Pregnant female elephant ‘electrocuted’ in South Kamrup (Guwahati) Dhrubajyoti Malakar, The Times of India December 4, 2024 Tragedy struck in South Kamrup’s Boko on Monday when a female wild elephant, estimated to be 30- 40 years old, was electrocuted to death. The incident occurred at Hashi revenue village near Muhipara reserve forest. According to forest officials, preliminary investigations suggest that the elephant was pregnant. Bondapara Range Officer Animesh Kalita said, “Preliminary investigation indicated that the elephant died due to electrocution. Some villagers may have put high voltage electric wires to save their paddy from elephants, resulting in the fatal incident. A detailed post-mortem examination has been done, we are awaiting the result.” Although forest officials searched for evidence of electric wires, none were found. “We are investigating the incident and have found some leads. The perpetrator will face consequences as per law once the crime is proven. Setting up high-voltage electric wires to chase away elephants is an offence. They can install solar fences instead,” Kalita said.
