A tea worker died after an elephant attacked him on Monday morning. The
accident took place at Hantapara tea garden in Madarihat of Alipurduar in
West Bengal. The deceased was identified as Kande Munda.

On Monday, Munda was tending a tea plant in Section 29 of Hantapara Tea
Garden when he was suddenly attacked by an elephant from behind amid thick
fog, the Haldapara forest office said. Other workers brought Kande Munda to
the Madarihat Primary Health Center in a critical condition. Munda died
there while undergoing treatment.

"My brother was injured in the elephant attack. When he was taken to the
hospital, the doctor declared him dead," said the brother of the deceased
tea worker, Sinu Munda.

Forest workers of Jaldapara National Park came to the spot following the
incident.

Madarihat police sent the body to the Alipurduar District Hospital for
autopsy.

The forest department announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family
of the deceased. Sinu Munda said that he has also been attacked by
elephants while working in the garden.
