A 75-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Amba village, near
Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary (KGWLS), at 2:30 am on Tuesday while
guarding his wheat crop from stray cattle.

Divisional forest officer B. Shiva Shankar said Braj Lal, was sitting on a
platform built on a tree in his field when the elephant knocked it down and
trampled him. His body was discovered at dawn by locals. Police have sent
it for autopsy.

Since the Terai Elephant Reserve (TER) was notified in Dec 2022, over 10
fatal human-elephant conflicts have been reported, with more than six
villagers severely injured. In Sept 2023, two farmers were killed and one
injured in Tanda Chhatrapati village near the Barahi forest range of
Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR).

KGWLS has an estimated 120 to 150 wild elephants, with seasonal migrations
to Nepal's Bardiya Tiger Reserve through the Khata-Katarniaghat corridor,
Shiva Shankar said. He added that TER lacks dedicated funding from the
Central or state govt for compensating victims of elephant attacks or crop
damage. "We will recommend Rs 4 lakh compensation for Braj Lal's family
from the state's disaster relief fund, and the forest department will
provide an additional Rs 1 lakh," he said.
