Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday reiterated the country's
commitment to protect elephants.

"On World Elephant Day, (we are) reiterating our commitment to protect the
elephant," Modi said in a statement posted on social media. "The number of
elephant reserves has risen in the last eight years (in India)."

The Indian prime minister also lauded the efforts of elephant
conservationists on the occasion of the World Elephant Day.

According to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a leading conservation
organization, elephant populations in Africa and Asia have experienced
significant declines over the last century. The greatest threat to African
elephants is poaching for the illegal ivory trade, while Asian elephant
populations are mostly at risk from habitat loss and human-elephant
conflicts.
