An elephant calf was successfully rescued from a canal following an intense
rescue operation in the Asanbani village under the Betanati range in the
Mayurbhanj district, on Wednesday.

According to sources, the elephant calf had fallen into the canal. The
mother elephant had initially tried very hard to rescue the baby, but the
young one could not come out. When the mother elephant failed to rescue the
baby, it started roaring. Listening to the elephant roaring, villagers, the
Gajasathi team and forest officials swung into action to rescue the baby
elephant.

The Forest Department officials waited for the mother elephant to get a
little away from the calf and then stepped into the canal for the rescue
operation to begin. During the rescue operation, the mother elephant was
seen being violent and attacking the JCB machine used in the rescue
operation.

Despite the obstacles, the rescue team persevered and finally managed to
rescue the calf safely after a four-hour effort. The mother and baby
elephant strayed into the nearby forest after being united.

The herd of elephants sneaked into the village in search of food when the
mishap took place. The rescue operation was carried out with utmost care
and precision, ensuring the safety of the elephant calf.
