A person was arrested on charges of killing an elephant after he
surrendered late Tuesday evening at Central Range Krishnai in Assam's
Goalpara district. Authorities seized body parts of the animal from his
possession.

The incident occurred at Goalpara's Barigaon village under Matia
subdivision, where locals found the carcass of a male elephant,
approximately 18-20 years old, lying in a paddy field. Forest officials
presumed that the elephant had wandered in search of food.

"We received information from the locals about the carcass at around 8:10
am. During our preliminary investigation, we found a portion of the trunk
was cut off, and the tail and nails were missing. We suspect that the
animal was electrocuted as we found strands of wire near the carcass. A
detailed post-mortem examination has been done, and we are awaiting
results," said Subimal Kounda, the assistant conservator of forest (ACF) of
Goalpara forest division.

The officer said the culprit has been identified as Fredison Sangma, who
was hiding in a nearby village approximately 1 km from the crime scene,
named Borjhar Garopara. "We followed a trail of the animal's blood, which
led us to a village. During a thorough search, we discovered a house where
we suspected the body parts might be hidden, but there was no one there,"
the ACF said.

The officer added that the owner was eventually detained once he returned.
When the villagers learned of the situation, they confronted the man and,
after being briefed on the details, pressured him to surrender. "Sangma
surrendered with the trunk and tails; however, he did not have the nails
with him. During interrogation, he did not give any clear answer. The
search for those nails is currently ongoing," the officer added.

The officer confirmed that charges were filed under Sections 9, 39, 50, and
51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

"The accused appeared before the CJM court in Goalpara on Wednesday and has
been remanded in judicial custody for seven days," the officer added.
