Villagers living in Mathakondapalli near Hosur in Krishnagiri district had
a pleasant surprise on Monday as a herd of six elephants including a calf
suddenly arrived in the area to take a bath in a lake. They were in for a
visual treat seeing the gentle giants frolicking in water.

Forest officials said that the herd came out of the Thally forest range in
Hosur forest division to take a bath in the lake as it was almost filled to
the brim.

“The herd of six elephants including a calf came to the lake for bathing.
We alerted the locals about the elephants and closely monitored the herd’s
movement,” said a forest official from the Thally forest range.

Forest officials said that the elephants usually visit the water bodies
near to the boundaries of the forest for drinking water and bathing.

The villagers were delighted with the surprise visit by jumbos and said
that they did not cause any trouble while bathing in the lake for four
hours after which they returned to the forest.

“However, the forest officials should drive the herd deep into the forest
to avoid human animal conflict,” said J Subbaiah, one of the villagers.
