A 45-year-old man was crushed to death by an elephant in the Kodekela Beat
of the Chhal Forest Range of Dharamjaigarh forest division in Raigarh
district early Saturday morning. Two months ago, a woman was killed in a
bear attack in the same forest area.

Divisional Forest Officer Abhishek Jogawat said that the deceased,
identified as Raju Das, 45, went to gather Mahua flowers on Saturday
morning when the elephant attacked him.

The forest department team arrived at the scene and began further
investigation after learning of the villager's death due to the elephant
attack.

While Das was busy gathering Mahua flowers, he suddenly encountered an
elephant, which then lifted him with its trunk and slammed him to the
ground, resulting in his death.

It is reported that the news of the villager's death due to the elephant
attack has created an atmosphere of fear throughout the Chhal Range.
According to the villagers, a lone elephant is roaming in the area.

Meanwhile, the DFO said that the elephant was spotted in the Singhi Jhap
forest beat area of the range on Friday night during the beat movement.
Perhaps, the same elephant entered the Kodekela beat area and killed the
man.

The DFO mentioned that the villagers habitually go into the forest early in
the morning to collect mushrooms, "dantun," and other items. During the
gathering of Mahua flowers, the man might have confronted the elephant, the
DFO said.

“The forest department has raised an alarm in the area and advised
villagers to stay alert, a measure we undertake at regular intervals.
However, the villagers rarely follow our instructions.," the DFO added.

Two months ago, a bear attacked and killed a woman, who was the mother of a
beat guard, in the same range, the DFO said.
