Kannur: A 50-year-old toddy tapper was critically injured after a wild
elephant attacked him at Aralam farm in the district on Thursday. The man,
identified as T K Prasad, a native of Amabalakandy in Aralam panchayat, was
found in a semi-conscious condition with broken ribs by residents in the
morning.
He was rushed to the Aster MIMS, Kannur, and his condition remains
critical. According to residents, Prasad had left his home on Wednesday
evening to tap coconut trees at the farm, but did not return. Though his
relatives and residents launched a search in the evening, Prasad could not
be traced. It was around 6am on Thursday, his fellow toddy tappers found
Prasad in Block 3 of the farm with serious injuries. They immediately
rushed him to the hospital.
According to the hospital authorities, Prasad was put on ventilator
support. The man is suffering from breathing difficulties as the broken
ribs pierced his lungs. Additionally, his jaws and teeth were broken in the
attack.
Aralam farm, a tribal rehabilitation centre on the fringe of Aralam
wildlife sanctuary, has been witnessing back-to-back instances of wild
elephant attacks. Prasad is the fifth victim of the wildlife attack in the
last three weeks. Since 2012, as many as 16 persons have lost their lives
in wild elephant attack at the farm.
The incidents had triggered widespread protests against the forest
department for its failure in addressing the issue. Following this, forest
minister AK Saseendran agreed to ensure preventive measures to stop wild
elephants from venturing into residential areas. A elephant-proof wall and
other scheme were planned. But, the projects has not been executed so far.
