Madikeri: A wild tusker, once a dominant presence in the dense forest and
frequently venturing roadside, now endures immense suffering. This is the
tale of Kajur Karna, who was rescued by the foresters after being shot at
by poachers. He is now housed in the kraal at Dubare Elephant Camp.

His leg wounds are deteriorating, with embedded gun bullets now emerging
from the injuries, officials stated.

The wild elephant Kajur Karna, frequently spotted near Somwarpet's Kajur
area causing public concern, was captured on Feb 1 following govt
authorisation. The elephant was subsequently transported to Dubare Elephant
Camp with handler assistance and placed in a kraal for training.

Staff noticed a cavity on Kajur Karna's rear left leg, accompanied by
swelling, causing difficulty in movement. Forest department officials
initiated treatment over the past fortnight. During the examination, the
leg revealed significant pus accumulation. While draining, they discovered
glass bullets used for animal hunting. Additionally, they extracted a
bucket of pus and approximately 2kg of necrotic tissue from the leg.

While treating the left leg, swelling appeared in the right leg.
Examination revealed two more bullets, which were extracted. This leg also
contained pus, which was removed during ongoing treatment.

A thorough examination revealed multiple small bullet impacts throughout
the jumbo's body. These fragments typically remain lodged in large animals'
bodies, potentially causing future complications. Surgical removal might be
necessary, but currently impossible as Karna remains untamed. Present
circumstances limit options for treatment and care.

DFO Bhasker said: "Kajur Karna is slowly responding to the treatment by
wildlife expert Dr Chittiappa. Pus is being drained out of the wound. The
tusker is being supervised by DRFO Ranjan."
