CHANDIL – Villagers from Ichagarh, plagued by persistent elephant attacks,
sought urgent assistance from the forest department on Saturday.
Ankur Singh, nephew of former Ichagarh MLA Arvind Singh, led the delegation
to the forest ranger’s office in Chandil. The group submitted a memorandum
demanding swift action to address the elephant menace. Moreover, they
requested the formation of a dedicated team to tackle the issue in affected
areas.
Villagers also sought appropriate compensation for those impacted by the
elephant raids. Meanwhile, over half a dozen villages in Ichagarh
constituency have been affected by the ongoing elephant incursions. Ankur
Singh distributed more than two dozen torches among the affected villagers
as a preventive measure. He warned of potential protests if the forest
department fails to take positive steps.
"We’ll block the National Highway and stage a sit-in at the ranger’s office
if our demands are ignored," Singh stated. Farmers expressed concern over
their crops being trampled by herds of elephants. On the other hand,
villagers criticized the current MLA for not addressing their plight.
Prabhat Gorai, a local resident, highlighted the ineffectiveness of the
forest department’s response. Furthermore, he mentioned that even when
teams arrive, they lack necessary equipment like firecrackers to deter
elephants.
The affected villages include Kalyanpur, Kashidih, Hare Sindurpur,
Tilaitand, Anda, and Hutung in Nimdih block. Chaitan Gorai, deputy chief of
Heaven panchayat, emphasized the ongoing struggle with elephants over the
past 3-4 years.
