Heavy rain has claimed the life of an elephant calf in Kanyakumari district
of Tamil Nadu. The carcass of the male calf washed ashore at Kothai Mudangu
on the banks of the river Kodayar on Monday.

“Examination of the lungs during autopsy revealed that the animal had
drowned,” district forest officer (DFO) M Ilayaraja told TOI.

The calf was said to be part of a herd in Kodayar area. It could have
slipped into the Kodayar reservoir or it could have carried into the
reservoir by flash floods. As the shutters of the Kodayar dam was open, the
carcass was carried downstream, officials said.

The DFO said the animal could have died about 48 hours before it was
spotted at Kothai Mudangu around 11 am on Monday.

Around 2pm on Saturday, Tangedco officials at Kodayar dam spotted the
carcass in the reservoir. Forest department personnel rushed to the dam
area in about an hour but could not spot the carcass as the shutters of the
dam was kept open due to the heavy inflow. “Two teams searched for the
carcass downstream on Sunday. But the carcass was found on Monday morning,”
Ilayaraja said.

A veterinary doctor from the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve reached
the spot and performed an autopsy in the presence of the DFO, assistant
conservator of forest Manasir Haleema and Shivakumar and Kulasekaram range
officer

Though there were no external or suspicious injuries on the carcass,
samples of vital organs were collected for a forensic analysis.
