MADIKERI: The Forest Department successfully captured Kajur Karna, a
40-year-old wild elephant, on Saturday. The elephant had invaded villages
on the forest fringes.
For two years, Kajur Karna wandered around Aiguru, Kajur, Yadavare,
Sajjalli, Kovar Kolli, Yadavanad, and Banavar under Aiguru Gram Panchayat
and attacked locals.
The elephant's presence on the Madikeri-Somwarpet State Highway,
particularly between Kovar Kolli Junction and Kajur Junction, caused
significant concern among motorists. The forest department named it Kajur
Karna. Senior officials authorised its capture six weeks ago.
Operation Karna began with careful planning and monitoring of the
elephant's movements. After a 20-day absence, the elephant was spotted a
week ago.
The field staff observed that Kajur Karna regularly travelled from
Yadavanad forest to Kajur Tata Coffee Estate at night. Six elephants from
Dubare elephant camp - Prashant, Marthanda, Sugreeva, Srirama, Harsha, and
Dhananjaya - participated in the operation. Sixty staff members from
Somwarpet sub-zone were deployed. Police and animal husbandry and
veterinary officials were also involved in the drive.
After the jumbo was tranquilised, it fled into the forest, running about
one kilometre before losing consciousness. The team secured it with ropes,
administered revival medication, and transported it to Dubare elephant camp.
