CHAMARAJANAGAR: An elephant died after coming in contact with an illegally
drawn power line at Alathur village in Gundlupet taluk on Tuesday.
The elephant was found dead on the farm land of one Rajesh where the
illegal power line had been drawn. Forest Department officials visited the
spot and have registered a case. Meanwhile, a human chain protest was
staged at Bhuvaneshwari Circle in Chamarajanagar to oppose any plan to lift
the night traffic ban in Bandipur. Members of the Sanjeevini Trust and
other environmental groups took part in the protest.
The protesters demanded that the night traffic ban should continue as
allowing traffic can pose a threat to wildlife and damage the ecology.
Earlier, when Rahul Gandhi was Wayanad MP, there was pressure and now it
has been revived after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was elected, they noted.
They demanded that the Karnataka government should not succumb to any lobby
and not to put wildlife at stake for political benefit. Traffic was
affected for about half an hour due to the protest.
