Conservation efforts for the Kingdom’s wild elephants continues and experts
have recorded between 400 to 600 wild elephants and 70 domestic elephants.

The Ministry of Environment has actively supported the district elephant
conservation project and has collaborated with partners to develop a
long-term strategic plan for wild elephant conservation.

The Elephant Valley Project is an ecotourism project of the Elephant
Livelihood Initiative Environment (E.L.I.E.) that aims to improve the
health and well-being of domesticated elephants, conserve wildlife
sanctuaries and support local communities working closely with them.

The project in Mondulkiri has a veterinary team looking after the health of
Asian elephants living in their 1,500 hectares-habitat, including forests,
rivers and grasslands.

It also supports 2,000 local communities, mostly from the Bunong ethnic
group, through employment, skills training, community health care,
education support and facilitation of the voting.
