A wild tusker was electrocuted after a betelnut tree which it pushed fell
on a live-wire in Gudalur division of forests in the Nilgiris on Tuesday.
Radhakrishnan, Gudalur forest range officer said, “The tusker pushed the
tree while trying to eat its leaves. The tree fell on an overhead live-wire
that snapped. Unfortunately, the elephant came in contact with the snapped
wire and was electrocuted.”
The incident took place on the Bosepara-Machikolly panchayat Road near
Machikolly, 1km from the core area of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR).
“The EB line was at the prescribed standard height,” the forest officer
added.
Rajesh Kumar, forest veterinarian attached to MTR, conducted an autopsy as
per Tamil Nadu Elephant Death Audit Framework (EDAF) protocol. “The jumbo
might be around 35 years old. We have collected vital samples of the
pachyderm and sent it for further lab tests,” he said.
The carcass was later buried in a nearby forest.
