Jamshedpur: An elephant trampled a 42-year-old woman to death in a village
in Baharagora in East Singhbhum district on Wednesday, marking the third
fatal elephant-human encounter in the region this month.

Budhni Soren, a resident of Muturkham village, was collecting sal leaves
with two other women in the forest foothills early Wednesday morning when
they were caught off guard by the elephant which sneaked behind them. While
her companions managed to flee, Budhni stumbled near a Jaherthan and was
fatally trampled by the pachyderm.

Lakhan Soren, the deceased's son, said the women who survived alerted
Budhni's family upon reaching the village. Family members rushed to find
Budhni severely injured and in acute pain from multiple internal injuries
sustained in the attack. She was swiftly taken to the Baharagora community
health centre (CHC), the doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Baharagora police station in-charge Ishwar Chandra Munda said the incident
occurred close to the victim's home. Range forest officials have visited
the site and are investigating the matter to process compensation for the
bereaved family.

Wednesday's incident follows two recent elephant-related fatalities in the
region. On Sunday, a 36-year-old man fell prey to an elephant attack in
Samta village in West Singhbhum district. The elephant broke into his house
while he was asleep, dragged him approximately 200 meters, and killed him
on the spot. In a similar incident on March 25, Hadiram Murmu, 40, was
fatally attacked by an elephant in Machbhandar village, Gurabanda, while he
was headed to work his fields.

These recurring incidents highlight the growing human-elephant conflict in
the region, raising concerns about the safety of local residents and the
need for enhanced protective measures. Forest officials are urged to
implement stronger safeguards to prevent human-elephant encounters in the
future.
