Three injuries, apparently caused by rubber bullets, were found in the body
of the elephant in an examination following its capture.
Presence of injuries on the body of Palakkad Tusker 7 alias Dhoni, which
was captured in Kerala the other day, has triggered discussion over
attempts to provoke and injure wild animals which enter human habitations.
Three injuries, apparently caused by rubber bullets, were found on the body
of the elephant in an examination following its capture. Further
examination or treatment was difficult as the tusker continues to be
violent in the cage.
It is assumed that the elephant was attacked while it entered inhabited
places and farmlands. Forest Minister AK Saseendran said that such attempts
were highly unacceptable. “The elephant might have faced attacks when it
entered inhabited areas. But such violent acts will only provoke wild
animals. It might take revenge on humans,” he said.
Dhoni was captured three days ago following a mission that lasted for days.
According to reports, the injuries are not serious in nature. However,
further examination could be conducted only when the tusker is tamed.
Dhoni had created a lot of damage in Palakkad town. Last year, it trampled
to death a morning walker named Sivaraman.
Call to Capture Wild Elephants in Munnar
Following the death of a forest watcher in Idukki district, protests have
been mounting to capture elephants from inhabited areas in Chinnakanal
estate. After local people conducted a sit-in on Thursday which disrupted
traffic on Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway for hours, the forest
officials said that they would take steps to capture elephants in the area.
The strike was led by MLAs MM Mani and A Raja. Mani later told news
channels that he would request the state government to take necessary steps
to address the issue of wild elephants in the area. Forest officials too
said that the number of elephants in per sq kilometer forest land has
increased manifold.
Forest watcher Sakthivel, who is a member of Rapid Response Team, was
attacked and killed by an elephant herd on Wednesday. The attack happened
when he tried to chase them away from the estate.
