A female elephant was found dead at a plantation area near Athirappilly.
The carcass was located by rubber tapping workers at the ninth block of the
rubber estate run by the Kerala Plantation Corporation.

The corporation officials in turn alerted forest officials. Vazhachal DFO R
Lekshmi said the elephant appeared to be aged above 50 years. Impaction and
age-related ailments may have caused the death of the elephant, she added.

According to veterinary experts consumption of plastic covers, attached on
rubber trees to avert wetting of the tapping channel and the milk, may have
caused the impaction. The postmortem of the elephant was conducted and the
carcass was buried at the plantation itself on Saturday afternoon, as per
the advice of veterinarians.

Meanwhile, one person was injured in an attack by a wild elephant which had
strayed into human habitations at Palappilly on Saturday morning.

The injured person Chulakkal Bhaskaran (64) has been admitted to Pudukkad
taluk hospital.
