A three-year-old elephant calf was found electrocuted in a private land at
Kodanad on Sunday. It is suspected that the calf got electrocuted while
trying to pluck a jackfruit. The cable was found snapped and fallen on the
calf.

This is the second wild elephant casualty due to electrocution being
reported within 5km radius of Kodanad range in two weeks.

The first was of an 18-year-old tusker.

The calf is suspected to have been electrocuted on Saturday night or Sunday
morning. Forest officials said there were two or three herds in the area
and the staff drove them back to the forest. “The calf might have got
stranded in the area. Since it is a calf, we were very careful in
approaching the area to shift the carcass as the herd might be present in
the surroundings.

Besides the mother elephant, the eldest female elephant in the herd will
also be more careful about calves among them. We must avoid any
confrontation with wild elephants,” said an officer. Later they removed the
carcass.

The officer said electrical inspectorate officials will examine the area.
“If there is any lapse from the part of KSEB, the department will register
a case against the electricity board,” he said.
