A tusker aged around eight years was found dead on a patta land in Singara
forest range in Masinagudi division of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve buffer
zone on Monday evening.
After inspecting the tusker’s carcass, forest officials ascertained that it
was the same elephant that was treated by forest veterinarians on March 5,
when it was found lying in the Masinagudi forest range.
John Peter, Singara forest range officer, said the tusker had gotten up and
walked into forest after they provided treatment to it. “A team of forest
field staff had monitored the tusker’s movement for a few days, even as it
traversed from Masinagudi range to Singara range and joined a herd.”
However, the elephant was found dead on a patta land in the Singara forest
range on Monday evening. A postmortem was conducted on Tuesday. “The animal
was weak and worms were found in its liver. The carcass was left in the
forest for natural decay,” another source said.
