Karur: Six people, including a woman, were arrested in Karur on Tuesday for smuggling an elephant tusk worth around 20 lakh. Based on a tip, forest officials searched a private lodge in the Sungagate area of Karur and seized the ivory. The recovered tusk weighed 3.2kg and measured 85cm long externally and 74cm internally. Officials identified the arrested people as G Manikandan, 25, and R Nandu, 25, both from Karur district, as well as A Jyothilakshmi, 45, S Mathiyazhagan, 46, S Senthilkumar, 49, and M Muthukumar, 47, all from Trichy district. The accused were planning to sell the ivory. A case was registered under Wildlife Protection Act. The six accused were produced before the Karur judicial magistrate court, which remanded them in custody.
