A couple suffered minor injuries after their car crashed into an elephant
that wandered onto Jalan Mawai late last night.
District police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said the accident
happened at 10.40pm.
The couple was travelling with two passengers when the elephant appeared on
the road.
Although the vehicle was badly damaged, only the 53-year-old driver and his
wife sustained minor injuries.
The elephant fled into the nearby forest.
Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director
Aminuddin Jamin said investigations are ongoing as officers have yet to
receive full details.
He noted a similar incident two weeks ago, when a calf was found dead
believed to have been hit by a vehicle.
On Sept 5, an elephant bull was killed after a trailer crashed into it on
Jalan Sri Timur, Kampung Gajah, in Kluang.
Both Kluang and Kota Tinggi have frequent elephant sightings, with
residents raising concerns over poor road lighting near elephant habitats.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said over 100 human-elephant
conflicts100 human-elephant conflicts are reported in Johor annually, with
losses exceeding RM1.1 million.
He said Johor has about 160 wild elephants and the state government is
working on short, medium, and long-term measures to balance conservation
and public safety.
"Conserving elephants is not just a duty — it's a trust to maintain harmony
between humans and nature," he said.
