Gumla: Two persons, including a woman, were killed and two others sustained
injuries when a wild elephant attacked them in the Devgaon Chapatoli and
Tetartoli forest villages within the Palkot police station area in Gumla
district on Friday. The scared villagers are protecting themselves using
crackers and sticks. The deceased were identified as Christopher Ekka (57)
from Devgaon-Chapatoli village and Hemawati Devi (40) from Tetartoli
village. The two injured, Ajay Minj and Clara Baa of Devgaon-Chapatoli
village, are undergoing treatment at the sadar hospital.
Ajay said he and Christopher encountered the jumbo while heading to their
field early in the morning.
The jumbo attacked Christopher using its trunk and crushed him. The
elephant then moved to the neighbouring forest where Clara and her husband
Emil Baa were collecting mahua fruits. "The lone tusker first attacked my
wife by pushing her with its legs. It moved towards me but its trunk caught
my shawl which I had worn. Meantime, I ran toward a ditch where I took
shelter. The incident took place at about 5 am," Emil told TOI while
accompanying his wife to the sadar hospital.
Subsequently, the elephant proceeded to Tetartoli forest where it
encountered Hemawati, who was collecting mahua, and killed her at about
9.30 am. Forest officials provided Rs 30,000 as immediate compensation to
Christopher's dependents. Gumla divisional forest officer (DFO) Ahmed Belal
Anwar confirmed the incident.
