A septuagenarian man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at
Mutkamkocha village under Jamshedpur forest division in Gurabanda police
station limits in East Singhbhum district on Tuesday night, a forest
official said.

Forest ranger Digvijay Singh said Dhirai Murmu (65) was a resident of
Jotiasol village under the Jharpokharia police station in Odisha. He had
come to visit his relatives on Holi.
Dhirai was going to answer nature’s call when he crossed paths with the
elephant. He tried to escape but fell down. Area residents reached the spot
upon hearing Dhirai’s screams and chased away the elephant.

The ambulance, which was reportedly called by the locals to transport the
injured Dhirai to the hospital, couldn’t reach the place due to the
dilapidated condition of the road. The villager succumbed to the injuries
by the time he was taken to the Sadar Hospital, Ghatshila. The family of
the deceased were handed over Rs 25,000 for conducting the last rites of
the deceased. The compensation amount would be given to the next of the
kin.
