Villagers distressed over crop damage due to jumbo attack (Shivamogga)

Wild elephants from the Bhadra reserved forest are causing distress among
farmers by frequently raiding and damaging crops.
Villages near Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, such as Puradal, Belur, Male
Shankara, Hasuru and Sirigere, are bearing the brunt of these attacks,
resulting in substantial agricultural losses.
The forest department initially attempted to deter the elephants using
crackers, but the nocturnal raids persisted. In response to farmers'
protests and demands for effective measures, the department is now actively
pursuing the elephants with the assistance of staff from Sakrebilu Elephant
Camp and Shettihalli Sanctuary.
The high water levels in the Tunga River, are posing challenges to the
efforts, as the deep backwaters prevent the elephants from swimming across.
The elephants originally entered Shivamogga from Chikkamagaluru when the
backwaters receded several months ago.
Forest officials are diligently working to manage the situation while
ensuring the safety of both humans and animals.
