Various efforts are being made by the Kelantan Department of Wildlife and
National Parks (Perhilitan) to ensure that wild elephants do not disturb
local villagers.
State Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the department will
capture elephants roaming in village areas causing disturbances to
residents.
However, he emphasised that capturing and relocating wild elephants was not
a long-term solution.
Therefore, the department has advised villagers, especially farmers, to
take more effective steps to prevent conflicts with wild animals, such as
installing blue LED lights along identified paths that elephants use to
enter their farms.

"Always keep farms clean and avoid letting them become overgrown.
Additionally, building an electric elephant fence system (SPEG) around the
farm area is recommended," he said.
The department has also suggested constructing elephant trenches and using
other preventive measures to reduce disturbances in the long run.
"The relocation and release of elephants will be carried out with the
assistance of the staff from the National Elephant Conservation Centre in
Kuala Gandah, Lanchang, Pahang. The operation will also involve the staff
from the state Perhilitan," he added.
Mohamad Hafid further urged the public to be extra cautious and vigilant
when encountering wild animals and not to take matters into their own
hands, as this could pose a safety risk to themselves.
He added that any complaints can be directed to the Perhilitan department
through their hotline at 1-800-88-5151.
